The Conversation:

ZEF: Whether you are a solo-preneur or a small business owner, many of us have worked with other people that make up our "team." The most important element of working within a team is knowing who has the leadership skills. Now, why is this so important? 

  • Would you rather work with someone who slacks and wants free rides, or would you rather work with someone who has the leadership qualities that can inspire, motivate, lead, and guide you?

For me, it is important that I am able to find team members that display quality leadership skills because I know that I can count on them if and when I need them to step up their game. Tina, how do you identify a leader in your team?

TINA: I look for leaders who have a positive attitude and a can-do mentality. They must be optimistic with no negative talk.

ZEF: Brittney, how do you find this topic relevant to the work that you do?

BRITTNEY: All of my work is focused on helping people tap into their leadership abilities, whether it is for their personal success or growing an organization of other leaders. Being in network marketing, building leaders is like air - it is essential to your growth - and if you do not master the skills needed to not only identify leaders, but help them be successful, then your business will not thrive. I look for certain qualities in people and how their energy is. If they are open, positive, determined, and coach-able, then you know they have the skills to become a great leader.

ZEF'S TIPS FOR IDENTIFYING LEADERS IN YOUR TEAM:
My favorite method for identifying leaders in my team is the Call to Action test!
  • Give an assignment and ask to follow simple step-by-step process
  • Focus on deadlines and milestones

How can I tell if he/she is a leader?
  • Leaders ask questions - as simple and as basic as that
  • No questions is the first indication of either: they don't care, they are lazy, or they express an attitude (e.g. "I don't need to ask because I know it all")

How to tell if they succeed/fail at the assignment or task at hand?
  • Success - he/she goes above and beyond in performing the assignment; goes the "extra mile"
  • Failure - work is barely minimum - you can usually tell from the quality of work

TINA'S 5 TIPS FOR HAVING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE:

  1. You are in control - your attitude is your choice
  2. You are accountable - being accountable for your work and for things in your life means you no longer blame others for things that are going on in your life
  3. Be optimistic - believing in yourself, in your team, in your colleagues, and in your family is important for success
  4. Be solution-oriented - if you have a challenge at home or at work, that is a reality of life. Your attitude will determine how you approach this challenge
  5. Show gratitude - being gracious means seeing the good in people and situations as well as expressing your apreciation
BRITTNEY'S TIPS:
  • Look for people who have a certain energy and light about them and also those who have their hands up and are willing to put in the time to learn and get better.
  • You cannot force a leader to be created, but rather, you can help them to inspire their own individual talents to grow into their role. Allowing others to shine at their own unique strengths, I think, allows for their innate leadership skills to emerge.
  • Look for people who have a high commitment level to themselves and others in all areas of their life. If they can lead in one area, they can lead in another.
  • Let people go who can't keep appointments or are constantly late - those can be signs they are not ready for their leadership role and some more personal growth work must be done
